Adoption and Relocation
CARE strongly recommends that all friendly adult cats and all kittens be removed from the street and placed in loving homes. We do not, however, arrange adoptions ourselves. CARE's focus is on spaying or neutering as many homeless cats and kittens as possible. By devoting our time, energy and resources to this goal, we can fix more cats and prevent the births of thousands of unwanted kittens each year. If you have friendly cats you are willing to help find homes for please look over our adoption guidelines or get help from an area adoption group to be sure the cat goes to a safe and caring home. There are many people out there looking for “free” Cats that will use them for horrible things like fighting dog bait, Snake food and worse. All cats should be spayed or neutered BEFORE they go into a new home! Promises to do so later often do not pan out and you have a whole new colony start up in a new location. Don’t make the mistake of adding to the problem. Please look through this section for more information on how to relocate friendly or feral cats.
A Last Resort - Florida Feline Sanctuaries
There are two permanent resident facilities in Florida. These should be considered last resort as quality of life is, while clean and the best that can be provided, minimal. Those that are terminally ill, feral or have chronic behavior problems that make the cats unadoptable are the main candidates for living in these sanctuaries.
One is 10th Life Sanctuary, www.10thlifesanctuary.org , in Clewiston.
The other is www.caboodleranch.com, which is up near Jacksonville.
The donation fee for entry is a few hundred dollars per cat to provide food and medical care for 20+ years of natural life for the cat. Tenth life (and likely Caboodle as well though I know less about them) guarantees that they will never euthanize a cat (except in cases of extreme illness with no hope of recovery) so long as they remain operational.
